Isotonic eccentric contraction (slowly performed) for strengthening weak postural muscles and preparing their agonists for stretching
Indications
- Strengthening weak postural muscles.
- Preparing tight antagonists to inhibited muscles for stretching.
Isotonic eccentric contraction (isolytic, for reduction of fibrotic change, to introduce controlled microtrauma)
Isotonic concentric contraction (for toning or rehabilitation)

Toning weakened musculature. Continue reading
Isometric contraction – using reciprocal inhibition (chronic setting, with stretching)
Indications
- Stretching chronic or subacute restricted, fibrotic, contracted soft tissues (fascia, muscle) or tissues housing active myofascial trigger points.
- This approach is chosen if contracting the agonist is contraindicated because of pain.
Isometric contraction – using PIR (in a chronic setting, with stretching, also known as post-facilitation stretching)
Indications
- Stretching chronic or subacute restricted, fibrotic, contracted soft tissues (fascia, muscle) or tissues housing active myofascial trigger points.
Isometric contraction – using post-isometric relaxation (in an acute setting without stretching)
Indications
- Relaxing acute muscular spasm or contraction
- Mobilizing restricted joints
- Preparing joint for manipulation
